Knock Knock…

Who's there? Connecting rod. So during the last hour of Drift Matsuri I had a rather impressive and total failure of the oil relocation fitting on my oil pump. I was just transitioning off the 1st corner on the fast track when what can only be described as a 'fan' of very hot oil started pumping from under the Audi all over the very hot manifold.

Just give it a tappity tap tap…

This 944 certainly still has some rust issues, and I'm still not quite sure if it's viable to rebuild it - or if what it wants is a re-shell, but I'm happy to say it now runs. After scratching my head a bit and eliminating faults, it turned out all the injectors were seized so no fuel was getting through. Once the injectors were out, all it

A rare Tdi? Surely not…

This is a post mainly for my North American friends. I love a quattro, so when I saw this A4 B5 (1998) 1.9TDi Quattro Avant, I picked it up. Maybe nothing special in the UK (although trying to find a replacement gearbox for it tells me they weren't plentiful), but I would love to have one of these in the winter in the Midwest.

Gasket inferiority complex…

All gaskets are not created equal. I've been battling an oil leak of the left bank of the 2.7 twin-turbo. It took me a while to track it down as there were a few oil leaks in the vicinity (one was coming from a stress crack in the valve cover itself from a thrown cam chain - but that's another story) and it was dripping oil

Short and sweet…

Had time to fit a short shift kit to the Audi tonight. I changed a few things on the kit I didn't like to make it stiffer and it's now also harder to get the car into reverse accidentally. I was having trouble downshifting from 3rd to 2nd with confidence so I'm hoping this improves things. Everything is certainly all much stiffer now, and the throw is

1st place and still rolling…

Well, what a weekend! The sun stayed out and we had a fantastic time at Pembrey for a Drift-Inc Weekender. Not too many issues and gained some much-needed seat time in advance of Drift Matsuri. The little Audi that could is still in ongoing development (and will probably always be), but is finally proving it can put the power down when needed at maximum angle.

Have you got one?

We're on the lookout for the following project cars right now in the UK. Cash waiting and can transport them off your drive. Pre-oval dash 944 manual (1985 and older) 924s - 2.5 924 Prefer black interiors (doesn't matter if it's not a Pasha interior - but damn it is cool), and black cars if possible. Motors not important, they don't even need to be

You spin me right ’round…

This is a set of original Avus 17" wheels that needed a refurb. They were fundamentally in fairly good shape, just tired from 120k of road use.  Sand, prime, sand, prime - continue until the finish is lovely and smooth with no signs of scratches or other blemishes. The key to a good finish is always in the time spent prepping and sanding. Once they

It’s simple, and it’s dry…

Air-cooled engines are just simple things. Sure, they're a bit high-strung, drip oil and don't provide any discernible heating supply - but what they lack in additional fluids they make up for with simple engineering. They're also relatively dry, and without water everywhere pulling them out of a car is a pretty simple procedure. I've pulled motors on lifts, in pits and just on the ground

Down by the bay…

The stock CDI unit had been removed by a previous owner on this motor and it was running on just a 12v coil, so a MSD 6A was fitted along with electronic points and high-gauge ignition leads. Something was still wrong with the timing curve though, and after investigation into the distributor the answer was revealed. Someone had been tampering with the weights and it
